Sacred Significance
"Baba Kal Bhairav, known as the Kotwal (Protector) of Kashi, is believed to guard the holy city of Varanasi. Devotees strongly believe that without Baba’s blessings, no one can truly stay in Kashi. Offering Chadhawa (sacred offerings) to Baba removes fear, enemies, diseases, and obstacles, while bringing blessings of protection, prosperity, and peace. At the temple, devotees usually offer black cloth, black sesame seeds, mustard oil, garlands (especially marigold), coconut, sweets, and liquor. Each offering has its own spiritual significance – mustard oil lamps drive away negativity, black cloth and sesame pacify planetary doshas, while liquor is a unique traditional offering to please Baba. The sacred Bhabhuti (ash) from the temple is considered a very powerful prasada, believed to protect devotees from all forms of fear and evil forces."
